The megacity Wakes Up to Dangerous Smog Post Festival of Lights

As Tuesday dawned residents of the planet's dirtiest urban center encountered inhaling severely hazardous air that fell into the "alarming" category.

Extremely High Pollution Measurements

Various sections of Delhi recorded an air quality index above 500, which translates to ten times the safe limit established by the World Health Organization.

In some locations, concentrations of toxic particulate matter hit highs of 1,800, amounting to 15-20x higher than healthy limits.

Pyrotechnics Restrictions and Current Changes

Beginning in 2020, officials had implemented a total prohibition on the purchase and ignition of firecrackers during Diwali due to their substantial impact to the hazardous pollution that blankets the city as colder weather sets in.

Yet in recent months, the recently formed local administration petitioned the supreme court to request a modification of the ban.

The suggestion was allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – previously questioned by environmental experts as being only approximately one-third reduced emissions – as a compromise between "cultural practices and ecological concerns".

Legal Ruling and Enforcement

To the disappointment of public health and environmental activists, judicial authorities complied with the request, stipulating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be set off during designated time windows throughout the Diwali.

Throughout the festival evening, there was extensive flouting of the regulated periods across the capital, with insufficient enforcement regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the supposedly greener type.

Several monitoring devices throughout Delhi showed contamination reaching highest levels around the night hours to extremely hazardous levels seen during the festival in at least recent memory.

Regional Consequences

The proliferation of pyrotechnics during the celebrations also triggered a controversy with adjacent Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistan's Punjab province partially attributing declining atmospheric conditions in Lahore on hazardous particles coming from neighboring India following the events.

Long-Standing Pollution Issue

The dangerously high levels of pollution in the city have persisted as a serious issue for fifteen-plus years, with the condition showing no improvement.

Around celebratory seasons, the levels of toxic particles in the atmosphere has been found to shoot up to significantly exceeding the peak records ever measured in the Chinese city, which was once regarded as the planet's dirtiest city.

Multiple Contamination Contributors

The problem in the capital is caused by a convergence of different contributors including automobile exhaust, dust, building projects, waste incineration and haze from farm burning in nearby areas of farming communities.

Within these states, farmers illegally ignite agricultural waste to expedite field preparation, creating hazardous smog that becomes contained over the city as winter air arrives.

Medical and Financial Consequences

The economic and health impact on the roughly thirty-three million inhabitants residing in the Delhi area is substantial, according to various research.

This pollution causes elevated rates of neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, and can even lead to malignancies.

The pollution is calculated to be responsible for 10,000 untimely mortalities annually in Delhi.
