No fewer than thirteen passengers lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship government projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” declared the country's president.

The president announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose term ended the year before. This project was closely associated with his administration's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its role in public projects. They were built at an accelerated speed, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had also sparked persistent concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This pause was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."

In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been running in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and running of these vital initiatives.
